SOLAR THAT FITS THE RV AND THE WAY YOU CAMP.

Useful RV solar starts with the loads you use, the battery bank you have and the roof space that is actually available. Panel wattage is only one piece. Controller sizing, conductor routing, voltage drop, protection and battery charging all have to work together.

What gets reviewed

Before adding panels, the existing charging system and the realistic solar contribution are reviewed together.

System review

  • Usable roof area, obstructions, vents and likely shading
  • Existing solar panels, controller and wiring if already installed
  • Battery-bank size and charging requirements
  • MPPT controller sizing and input-voltage limits
  • Roof-to-controller and controller-to-battery conductor sizing
  • Disconnects, fusing or breakers and cable entry points
  • Expected daily energy production compared with actual RV loads

When solar may be worth reviewing

  • You camp away from shore power and want to reduce generator use
  • The battery bank is large enough that shore-only charging feels limiting
  • Existing solar is too small or is not keeping up with daily use
  • A lithium upgrade is creating room for more usable off-grid energy
  • You want charging that happens automatically while the RV is parked

A practical RV-first process

1Understand the RVExisting batteries, converter/charger, solar, distribution, tow charging and the loads you actually want to run.
2Size the system togetherBattery capacity, charging sources, inverter loads, protection and wiring are considered as one electrical system.
3Install and verifyConnections, protection, charging behaviour and system operation are checked before the job is considered complete.

Common questions

How much solar can fit on an RV roof?

It depends on the usable roof area after allowing for vents, air conditioners, antennas, awnings and practical panel spacing. The electrical design also has to stay within the controller input limits.

Will solar run an RV air conditioner?

Solar can help replace some of the energy used, but air conditioning is a very large load. Battery capacity, inverter size and recharge strategy need to be considered together.

Does adding more panels always help?

Only if the controller, wiring and battery system can accept the additional array. More roof wattage is useful when the rest of the charging system is sized to support it.
