Do not choose battery capacity from RV length or from the biggest number that fits the compartment. Start with how much energy you use, how long you want to go between meaningful charging, then make sure the battery can also support the inverter and charging system.

Which battery size should you even be looking at?

If you already know roughly how many watt-hours your RV uses each day, this gets you into the right capacity neighbourhood. If you do not know your daily watt-hours, use the full calculator instead.

Planning assumption: 12.8V LiFePO4 and about 80% usable capacity. Solar and future driving are treated as recharge sources, not as a reason to pretend the parked battery bank is bigger than it is.

Capacity is not the only battery number that matters

BMS current can matter more than amp-hours

A large amp-hour rating does not automatically mean a battery can supply any inverter load. Check the battery manufacturer's continuous and peak current ratings against the real inverter demand.

Physical fit is a separate question

Measure the battery compartment, cable access, hold-down space and service clearance. A battery can have the right capacity and still be the wrong physical choice for the RV.

The converter and charger still matter

A large lithium bank with weak or incompatible charging can create long recharge times and disappointing real-world use. Shore charging, solar and DC-to-DC charging should be reviewed around the way the RV actually travels.

Bigger is not automatically better. An oversized bank with inadequate charging can simply mean carrying around more empty battery.

Common RV lithium battery buying questions

Is 100Ah enough for an RV?

It can be, especially for light use with dependable charging. The problem starts when the RV uses close to the bank's usable energy every day and charging is less reliable than expected.

Is 200Ah the sweet spot?

For many moderate-use RVs it can be a sensible comparison point, but there is no universal sweet spot. A fridge-heavy or Starlink-heavy RV may need more, while a hookup-focused camper may need less.

When should I look at 300Ah or 400Ah?

When the actual daily energy calculation, desired parked days and reserve push you there. Larger banks also require a more serious look at charging time, BMS current and installation space.

One 300Ah battery or three 100Ah batteries?

One larger battery can reduce connection count and simplify installation. Several smaller batteries can be easier to handle and may provide some redundancy. Manufacturer parallel limits, cable layout, fusing, BMS current and serviceability should decide it, not capacity alone.

Can I just replace my lead-acid batteries with lithium?

Sometimes the physical swap is simple, but converter settings, solar charging, tow-vehicle charging, protection and low-temperature charging still need to be checked.
