The existing converter, DC distribution and battery wiring are checked before deciding whether replacement or reconfiguration is actually needed.

System review

  • Converter or charger make, model and available charge profiles
  • Battery chemistry, capacity and recommended charging voltage
  • Available charger output compared with battery-bank size
  • DC wiring and protection between charger and battery
  • Voltage drop under charging load
  • How shore charging interacts with solar and other charging sources
  • Whether the existing DC distribution panel should remain or be modified

When the charging equipment deserves attention

  • A lithium battery upgrade is being planned and the existing converter is unknown
  • The battery bank charges very slowly on shore power
  • Charging voltage never reaches the expected range
  • The converter runs constantly, overheats or behaves inconsistently
  • A larger battery bank has outgrown the existing charger output

Common questions

Does every lithium upgrade need a new converter?

No. Some existing chargers already have a suitable lithium profile or output. The model, settings and actual charging voltage should be checked before replacing equipment.

Is a larger converter always better?

No. The battery bank, conductor size, branch protection and the manufacturer charging limits all matter. Charger output should be sized as part of the whole DC system.

Can solar and the converter charge at the same time?

They often can. Each charging source should be compatible with the battery chemistry and configured so the combined system behaves predictably.
