DC-to-DC charging can turn travel time into useful battery recovery, especially with lithium. The right setup depends on the tow vehicle or motorhome alternator, cable length, available current, battery chemistry and how much charging you actually need on the road.

When DC-to-DC charging may help

  • The RV battery arrives at camp with little meaningful recharge from the tow vehicle
  • A lithium bank has more charge capacity than the factory 7-way circuit can usefully provide
  • Solar production is inconsistent while travelling or during shoulder seasons
  • You move camps frequently and want travel time to contribute to charging
  • A camper van or motorhome needs a controlled alternator-to-house-battery charging path

Common questions

Why not just use the factory 7-way charge wire?

A factory charge line can provide some current, but long cable runs and relatively small conductors often limit useful charging. A DC-to-DC charger provides controlled charging and can make better use of a properly sized dedicated circuit.

How many amps should a DC-to-DC charger be?

Charger size depends on the alternator or tow vehicle, battery bank, travel time and wiring that can reasonably be installed. Bigger is not automatically better.

Can DC-to-DC charging and solar work together?

Yes. They are separate charging sources and can complement each other when each controller is configured for the battery system.
